NYC Woman Stabbed in Neck While Jogging Brooklyn Waterfront; Marathon Weekend Shadowed by Attack
A 28-year-old woman was critically injured after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along Brooklyn's Shore Parkway Greenway on Friday night, police said. No suspect has been identified, and investigators are asking the public for help as the New York City Marathon weekend begins.
NEW YORK β A 28-year-old woman was critically injured after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along a Brooklyn waterfront path Friday night, the New York Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital.
The attack happened around 8 p.m. near Shore Parkway and Bay 17th Street in the Bath Beach neighborhood, according to the NYPD. Police said the woman was jogging eastbound along the Shore Parkway Greenway when she was stabbed multiple times in the neck.
Emergency medical personnel took her to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition. An NYPD spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Saturday that the woman remained alive. Police have not released her identity, and investigators have not identified a suspect.
The New York Post, citing police sources, reported that the woman had been training for Sunday’s New York City Marathon. New York Road Runners, the organization that runs the marathon, told Fox News Digital it could not confirm whether she planned to run in Sunday’s race. NYRR said its records show she had previously participated in its races.
“We were sad to hear of this horrible attackβour hearts are with her family and the running community,” NYRR said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear what led up to the attack or whether the victim knew her attacker.
What We Know and What We Don’t
Police have released few details. The NYPD has not named a suspect, described a possible motive, or said whether anyone was taken into custody. The investigation remains open, and the department is asking anyone with information to contact its Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip through the Crime Stoppers website. All tips are confidential.
The section of the greenway where the attack occurred overlooks Gravesend Bay, with views of Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Post reported. The path is a popular route for runners and cyclists, and its waterfront setting makes it a busy corridor in daylight but potentially isolated after dark.
The Marathon Connection
The attack landed roughly 48 hours before the New York City Marathon, an event that draws more than 50,000 runners and tens of thousands of spectators to the city’s five boroughs. NYRR’s statement did not address security plans for the race, and it is not known whether the victim’s training was connected to Sunday’s event.
The timing nonetheless puts a spotlight on runner safety in the city’s public spaces. The Shore Parkway Greenway is one of several waterfront routes that marathoners use for long training runs, and the attack occurred on a stretch that is less densely populated than Manhattan’s Central Park or the Hudson River esplanade.
Who Is Affected
The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Her family has not been publicly identified. The running community, both in Brooklyn and among marathon participants, is directly affected by the attack and by the uncertainty over whether it was random.
For the NYPD, the case adds to a busy weekend of security operations tied to the marathon. The department has not said whether it is increasing patrols along the greenway in response to the stabbing.
