Kelsey Mitchell Sets WNBA Single-Season Scoring Record as Caitlin Clark Returns in Fever Win Over Tempo
Kelsey Mitchell added another milestone to her record-breaking season on Friday night, becoming the WNBA’s single-season scoring leader in the Indiana Fever’s 103-85 victory over the Toronto Tempo.
Mitchell finished with 33 points, bringing her season total to 1,034. The previous record of 1,021 points was set by A’ja Wilson, the back-to-back reigning WNBA MVP, in 2024 with the Las Vegas Aces.
The performance also marked Mitchell’s 25th consecutive game with at least 20 points, extending her own WNBA record. She shot 12 of 17 from the field and 7 of 11 from beyond the arc.
Caitlin Clark Returns from FIBA World Cup
Caitlin Clark, Mitchell’s teammate, contributed 28 points and matched her season high with 14 assists in her first game back since helping the United States win the women’s FIBA World Cup in Germany. Clark recorded her 14th double-double of the season, though she struggled from deep, going 2 of 8 from 3-point range. She was perfect from the free-throw line, making all 12 of her attempts.
Clark also dished out 14 assists in a home win over Toronto on June 16.
Friday’s game was the first for both teams after a nearly three-week break for the World Cup.
Tempo Struggle Without Mabrey
Toronto was without veteran guard Marina Mabrey, who the team announced Wednesday will miss the final four games of the season due to a right adductor injury. Mabrey has not played since a home loss to Indiana on Aug. 18.
Laura Juskaite led the Tempo with 22 points, while Kiki Rice added 18. Isabelle Harrison and Temi Fagbenle each scored 16, but Toronto dropped its fifth straight game.
The Tempo opened their inaugural season with a 9-9 record but have gone 2-21 since.
Playoff
Toronto has already been eliminated from postseason contention. Indiana, meanwhile, has clinched a playoff spot and moved into a tie with the Atlanta Dream for first place in the Eastern Conference following Friday’s win.
The Fever return home to host the Washington Mystics on Sunday. The Tempo will next face the New York Liberty.
